I’m still not a huge fan of Von Trier’s films, this one though might be one of his best, and a huge improvement over his previous one. It has fantastic imagery and some interesting themes. It is obviously a portrait of depression. You have a planet that is going to hit earth and he names it, what else, Melancholia. We see the eminent end of the world from the POV of a new bride, Justine, played by Kirsten Dunst. She seems happy at first and as her wedding goes on and on and in the days that follow, it is clear that she is on a downward spiral of depression. The setting is a huge beautiful estate and the other main characters include her sister and her brother-in-law. The sister is a scared emotional person and her husband is a logical scientifically-minded individual (played very well by Keifer Sutherland) who is positive that the planet is not going to hit earth. Well, it’s inevitable, just like Justine’s decline that it most certainly will.
