The Last Duel (Ridley Scott – 2021) A

I want to see so much more of what Ridley Scott is going to be doing if it is stuff like this in his late 80s! This is a brilliant Rashomon-style telling of a true story from the middle ages in France. Told from three perspectives and centering on an incident of sexual assault whose target (brilliantly played in three different tones by Jodie Comer) lodged a complaint against a well-regarded noble man and war hero. The the three re-tellings (her husband, her attacker and her story) are similar but very different in tone, details and nuances. This, plus excellent performances, deliberate pacing and a brutal duel at the end combine to make a memorable film.
