Blue Valentine (Derek Cianfrance – 2010) A-

It’s an effective and rough film about the brilliant sweet start and death of a love story. It’s told in flashbacks where we meet the struggling couple and their daughter and then we see in spurts and pieces how they met, fell in love and ended up married. Scenes and bits of dialogue are framed in a very effective way. They made me feel almost uncomfortable watching them at times. It’s also a testament to the really excellent work of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams who deliver probably some of their best performances.
