I turned the lights down, got me a bowl of homemade pumpkin ice cream and a kettle of strong espresso. Then I turned the volume up and watched Tree of Life. There really is no other way to watch this flick. It’s not a film that can be easily described and one can mock it as pretentious crap. Well, it is pretentious but it is not crap. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece but it is a skillfully made portrait of life from beginning to end (and beyond?) told mostly through the eyes of a middle class family in Texas in the 60s. It’s sort of like a poem with little dialogue and a very limited “plot”. It looks great and the performances are all solid. On that level, I enjoyed it quiet a bit, but I am not sure I would recommend it to too many people.
