It’s fascinating to watch Jim Carrey play the real life Texas-based (mostly) con man and escape artist Steven Russell. He makes the role funny but not too crazy. In other words he does not go all out manic Jim Carrey on it. Russell supposedly does everything here for his lover Phillip Morris, but I am not so sure. Morris might be the focus of his fascination, but I think he just cannot help himself. He is smart, likable and can almost get away with anything. The film, like Carrey’s performance, also hovers somewhere between a comedy, drama and biopic. Finding the proper note and tone to tell this story is a tough balancing act, but this movie pulls it off.
