Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola – 2009) A-

Angelo apparently took off from his home in NY city temporarily to “write a play” in Argentina. He never went back home, changed his name to Tetro and severed all relationships with his family. His much younger brother decides to pop in and see what his cranky reclusive older brother is doing. Coppola slowly crafts a fantastic portrait (mostly in crisp black and white) of a seriously dysfunctional family with a domineering famous maestro for a dad, a ballerina mom, an unfinished important play and many hidden family secrets. It’s a film that could’ve been written by the likes of Emily Bronte.
