The Third Man (Carol Reed – 1949) A

One of many black and white classics that I had never seen before. I watched it twice and enjoyed it very much.  The story is set in postwar Vienna where Holly Martins arrive and learns that his friend Harry Lime is dead. In traditional noir fashion, he starts asking questions and digging deeper into the mystery of Harry’s death. Eye-witness accounts do not match and the police seem to be of no help. Harry’s mistress of course knows more than she might be telling and Holly keeps on following the trail of that elusive…Third Man. We talk about movies that get dated after a few years, this one is several decades old and still as “relevant” as ever. The performances, the lighting, the noir look and music are all spectacular. I need to see more of these.
