Valley Girl (Martha Coolidge – 1986) B+

A sweet and uncommonly good teenage love story about a preppy girl from the valley, Julie,  who falls in love with the “wrong” punk guy, Randy, from Hollywood. Her girlfriends want her to dump him and go to the prom with her shallow but handsome ex-boyfriend. Julie needs to choose one or the other. The movie works because of a really good performance by a very young Nicolas Cage. He plays the likable and eccentric Randy perfectly. I also really liked Julie’s parents, the former Woodstock hippies who run a health food store. Valley Girl is a mature teenage romance movie that is rarely made. Now we either get raunchy “American Pie” knock-offs or dumb “Twilight-PG13” junk.
