Herzog claims that this film has nothing to do with Abel Ferrara’s original “Bad Lieutenant” and that the only common thing is the title. I’m sure he said that with a wink because the two films have a lot in common. This one is not as rough and disturbing as Ferrara’s and not as memorable. It’s still a good Herzog film and has some of his trademark touches like focusing for a bit too long on the damn iguana. Nicholas Cage is a perfect choice for the role of the immoral corrupt cop and delivers a fantastic performance.
