Bug (William Friedkin – 2006) A-

I went back and forth ont his one and I might be very generous with an A-, but still I cannot stop thinking about it! I caught this on IFC a few days ago and had no idea what to really expect. A “horror” flick maybe? I remember it was marketed as such when it came out. This however, was not a horror movie. It’s a fascinating portrait -more of a play than film even- of insanity and the descent into madness. Ashley Judd delivers an excellent performance as Agnes who is already messed up by an abusive ex and the loss of a child. Then she meets Peter who believes he has “bugs”. Peter was all Agnes needed to literally go crazy. It’s something when a film manages to make me think that the violent ex (Harry Connick Jr.) would actually be an improvement over good old Peter.
