Mean Streets (Martin Scorsese – 1973) A-

A bit dated, rugged and predictable. Certainly the work of a guy who is still honing his skill for future masterpieces. The whole film though is very effective as a character study and influential on both his future work and other directors’ work. It’s interesting for younger audiences like me, who have seen and loved Scorsese’s later work to see how his style was evident early on in both themes (guilt and the Catholic church) and style (slow motion long shots, colors to match the mood, rock tracks…).
